The History of BPW-HARDEMAN COUNTY TN

County Overview

Hardeman County is a county rich in history, culture and natural resources. The county was home to relatives of President James K. Polk, and has traditionally been called Historic Hardeman County, due to its preservation of early 19th and 20th Century homes and plantations. Most of these homes are included in the National Register of Historic Properties. In addition, the 2nd largest battle of the Civil War in Tennessee (The Battle of Davis Bridge) was fought in the county on October 5, 1862.

Coupled with its historical heritage, the county is endowed with several natural resources. Its fertile land, forestry and river make it one of the largest producers of cotton; soybean, corn, cattle, hogs and hardwood lumber in the State. With proximity to both Jackson and Memphis Tennessee, the county serves as a place for people seeking peaceful rural living with accessibility to city infrastructures.

BPW Beginnings

Our local BPW was chartered in October of 1973 with Ms. Marion Nuckolls serving as the first president. Did you know that the chartered membership totaled 45 people and that by the following January, it had increased to 74?. Community activities in the past include; Mentoring Young Women for Success, Annual Fashion Shows, International Dinners and Woman of the Month Award.  We also award two scholarships annually to two high school seniors.

Due to relocation, increase dues and other reasons, our club membership like others nationwide, have drastically reduced. It is the goal of current officers and membership to renew our commitments (GET FIRED UP), increase local awareness of our club (TURN UP THE VOLUME) and increase our membership (ASCEND TO NEW HEIGHTS).

Current Achievements

Our club receive a certificate at the 2004 State Convention for retaining at least 80% of its members from the prior year.
